A Guide to the Markets in Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence is a market lover’s paradise. This town has an outdoor market for every day of the week. Many days there are more than one market open. These markets in Aix-en-Provence were the reason we decided to stay in Aix for our month long stay.   Every day we enjoyed venturing to all the different markets to buy fresh food for our lunch and evening meals.  A Guide to the Markets in Aix-en-Provence France

The old town of Aix is very walkable with all of the markets located within a few minutes of each other.  We would often start our day at the daily market and then continue on to each of the other markets with a stop at a café for a nice little rest and a treat.

Marché de la Place Richelme

The market at Place Richelme is a daily market, that is even open on holidays like Easter. This is a fruits and veggie market where you can also get your bread, meats, cheeses and fish.  We snagged some delicious lavender honey that is not only tasty but smells wonderful.  We also recommend checking out the olive wood lady. We bought some beautiful olive wood boards and salad tongs which made great gifts.

Le Grande Marché

The “big market”, as it is affectionately termed, occurs on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at the Place des Prêcheurs.  You can get many of the same items here as you can at the daily market, but there are more vendors.  There is also a small flea market section, which has a wide variety of interesting items for sale.  I highly recommend buying some fresh fish from the fishmonger.  You must also stop by the pâté truck.  The mushroom pâté is amazing!

Expert Tip: Live like a local by buying a straw bag at this market to carry your daily shopping.

On Saturday, this market expands with the addition of a huge flea market section, which extends down through the side streets.  Give yourself lots of time to wander and explore.  This is my favourite market!

Flower Market

The flower market changes location based on the day of the week.  On days when there is no “big market” at the Place des Prêcheurs, the flower market takes over the location. On days of the big market, the flower market moves a short distance to the Hotel de’Ville (town hall).  The flower market is worth a visit just to enjoy all of the beautiful sight of flowers on display for sale.

Textile Market

On Tuesday and Thursday, the stunning Cours Mirabeau transforms into an outdoor textile market that extends the entire strip.  You may spot some of the same vendors from the ‘big’ Saturday market, but also quite a few new vendors.  Shoes, hoodies and pashmina scarves are popular items for sale in addition to some beautiful tableclothes and bed linens.

Old Book Market

For the book lovers, there is an old book market which takes place on the first Sunday of the month at the place de l’Hôtel de Ville.

  1. There are no longer any markets near and around Place de Precheurs…all the fruit and vegetable are, as they have been for years, still being sold just down from Hotel de Ville, but lots of the fruit and vegetable stall are now based around Fontaine de Rotonde…the flowers and plants are still being sold on Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays right by Hotel de Ville…the big markets is down around Fontain de Rotonde and up on the right side of Cours Mirabeau…as major works are happening around Place de Precheurs…and there are debates, as to whether stall holders will be moving back after the works have finished? However, the markets are still big and colour full as always, as we go every week! 🙂
